Scope and Research Question:  The Board Workgroup exists to support the governance, continuity, legal stewardship, operational oversight, and long-term strategic direction of the Clay Family Society (CFS). Its purpose is to coordinate and document decisions necessary for the effective administration and sustainability of the Society in fulfillment of its educational and genealogical mission.

In scope are:

• Governance policies and bylaws
• Strategic planning and organizational development
• Financial oversight and budgeting
• Membership administration oversight
• Website, archives, and digital governance coordination
• Event planning oversight (Gatherings,Video Meetups, Workgroup Meetups, Regional Meetups, other)
• Non-profit compliance and institutional records
• Coordination between committees, editors, officers, and workgroups
• Preservation of institutional knowledge and continuity planning

Out of scope are:

• Determining genealogical conclusions for specific Clay lineages
• Acting as an authority over evidence interpretation within lineage workgroups
• Editorial control of individual research hypotheses except where publication standards or Society policy apply
• Direct management of independent member research projects unless formally delegated

A well-defined governance scope allows the Board Workgroup to focus on organizational stewardship while preserving the independence and evidence-based nature of genealogical research throughout the Society.

The Board Workgroup will submit findings and organizational summaries periodically in the POCs and at least once every two years during the Biennial Meeting, or as otherwise directed by the Board.
