This Copyright & Intellectual Property Policy explains ownership, attribution, and permitted use of original content, research materials, and shared resources associated with the Clay Family Society.
1. Society-Owned Content
Members retain ownership of submitted content. By submitting content, members grant CFS a perpetual, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to use, reproduce, and archive the material for educational and historical purposes.
CFS may preserve archival copies of contributed materials as part of its historical record, even if such materials are later removed from public-facing platforms, where feasible and appropriate.
Content created under paid commission by CFS is owned by the Society unless otherwise agreed in writing.
Such content may be:
• Viewed, downloaded, and cited for personal, educational, or non-commercial use
• Quoted with proper attribution
Commercial reuse or republication requires prior written permission.
2. Member-Submitted Content
Members may submit genealogical data, narratives, images, documents, or research materials.
By submitting content, contributors:
- Retain ownership of their original work
- Grant CFS a non-exclusive, royalty-free license to store, display, reproduce, and preserve the material for nonprofit, educational, and historical purposes
- Affirm they have the right to submit the content
CFS does not claim ownership of original member submissions.
3. Third-Party Materials
Content sourced from archives, publications, or third parties remains subject to the original copyright holder’s terms. CFS endeavors to respect copyright and attribution standards but cannot guarantee unrestricted reuse of such materials.
4. Removal Requests
Requests to remove or correct content may be submitted to CFS. Legitimate requests will be reviewed in good faith, balancing scholarly integrity and historical preservation.
