Historical Context

Racial and Ancestral Heritage: DNA testing has revealed that the Clay family lineage encompasses both Black and White racial heritages. The society explores these divergent pasts, including ancestral roots sought in England.

Historical Ship Connections: Captain Samuel Argall of the ship *Treasurer* brought immigrant John Claye to Jamestown in 1613. Notably, the same captain and ship brought the first African Americans to Virginia in 1619.

Henry Clay’s Lineage and Actions: John Claye’s grandson, Henry, was an Indian trader who captured and enslaved two Native American children. Henry is well-known as the great-grandfather of Senator Henry Clay, “The Great Compromiser,” and the grandfather of Mitchell Clay.

Mitchell and Phoebe Clay: Mitchell Clay and his wife Phoebe Belcher Clay are prominent historical figures in the family lineage. Phoebe experienced the tragic loss of her children to the Shawnee Indians at Clover Bottom and Chillicothe, Ohio.
