Historical Context
Earliest Records & Military Service: The Clay Family Register tracks well over two thousand descendants dating back to 1443 AD. Early American military records show John, Robert, Slator, William, and Thomas Clay serving or listed in the Delaware Militia between 1778 and 1780. Numerous family members later served in the War of 1812, with records identifying veterans and their widows from Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, New York, and Massachusetts.
Geographic Distribution: An index of the 1850 Federal Population Census reveals a heavy concentration of Clay family households across dozens of counties in Ohio, including Darke, Mahoning, Pike, Richland, Seneca, Stark, and Trumbull counties.
