Historical Context
English Origins: An 1603 tomb inscription in Crich, Derbyshire, details the family of John Clay, Gent. (d. 1632) and his first wife, Mary Calton (d. 1583), daughter of King Henry VIII’s chief cock matcher. They had five children, including daughters Susanna, Mary, and Penelope (who married Thomas Brailsford in 1601). Sons William and Theophilus died young. John Clay’s second wife was Margaret Poole.
Virginia and Kentucky Stock: The family branched extensively from original Virginia stock into Kentucky and beyond. Early Virginia records note the baptism of Amy Clay (1727), daughter of Thomas, and John Clay (1733), son of Charles and Mary.
Texas Migration: Brothers Nestor (1799–1835) and Tacitus Clay (1804–1881) migrated from Kentucky to the Austin colony in Texas during the 1820s, acquiring extensive land grants. Nestor, a prominent orator at the Texas Convention of 1833, was killed by Indians in 1835. His son Tacitus and his brother’s sons, Thomas C. and Atreus M. Clay, later served in the Confederate States Army before returning to Independence, Texas.
Surname Variations: Research connects some branch descendants to the German surname “Klee.” Johan Nicholas Klee arrived in Pennsylvania in 1739; his descendants frontiered into Ohio, with at least one son changing the family name spelling to Clay.
